On the 18th November 1951, Mosquito RL230 ran into the slipstream of target aircraft whilst practising night interceptions. The pilot subsequently lost control and the aircraft impacted heavily with the ground at Crabtree Farm, Maunby near Northallerton.
The pilot and his navigator were killed; some items of wreckage were discovered just below the surface including small pieces of Birch plywood of which the mosquito was largely constructed. The RL230 was a night fighter version of the Mosquito, or “Wooden Wonder” as it was nicknamed, and was built at the Leavesden factory of De Havilland Aircraft.
The site has been preserved by our clients Messrs Greensit brothers who have been farming for the last 60 years.
Crabtree Farm, Maunby is now going to be sold by Auction on 1st October 2014 at The Allerton Court Hotel, Northallerton at 7pm.
